SpaceX on verge of 3rd supply run to space station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The International Space Station is about to get another commercial shipment.

The California company known as SpaceX is scheduled to launch its unmanned Falcon rocket from Cape Canaveral on Friday. On board is a Dragon capsule filled with more than a ton of tools, computer hardware and science experiments. The freezers are filled with stem cells and other research items. There's no room this time for ice cream for the six-man station crew.

Forecasters put the odds of good weather at 80 percent. Launch time is 10:10 a.m.

This will be the third space station visit for SpaceX. NASA is paying the company to supply the orbiting lab. Russia, Europe and Japan also provide delivery services. NASA's shuttles used to be the main haulers, but they retired two years ago.

Chemicals linked to obesity in black children - Mother Nature Network

Black children with high levels of hormone-altering chemicals used in some shampoos and lotions are more likely to be obese, according to research published today.

?

The study by New York University scientists is the second to link phthalates to obesity in children but the first to use a large sample of children and look for racial disparities.

?

Black children have much higher levels of the chemicals in their bodies than children of other races, and for every tripling of certain compounds, they were 22 percent more likely to be obese, according to data from 2,884 children aged 6 to 19. No links to obesity were found in white or Hispanic children.

?

?The takeaway is we need to consider environmental exposures when looking at the obesity problem,? said Leonardo Trasande, a professor at New York University School of Medicine and lead author of the study. ?Environmental chemicals may contribute independently of diet and exercise.?

?

Phthalates are a large family of chemicals with varied uses. The phthalates associated with black children?s obesity were the kind commonly added to personal care products to make fragrances last longer. Other phthalates are used to make vinyl and can be found in food packaging, medical devices and flooring.

?

Trasande and colleagues checked for a variety of phthalates and only found a link to the kinds used in personal care products.

?

Both Trasande and other researchers were quick to point out that this doesn?t mean phthalates cause obesity.

?

?It?s a big study and nationally representative, which is good,? said Joe Braun, an epidemiology professor at Brown University who was not involved with the research. ?But since they measure phthalates levels in urine and obesity at the same time, it?s a chicken and egg problem. Do phthalates cause obesity or are obese children more exposed?? It?s unclear, he said, when they were exposed relative to when they became obese.

?

Kathryn St. John, a senior director of product communications at The American Chemistry Council, which represents chemical manufacturers, said no conclusions can be drawn from this study about whether a significant increase in childhood obesity can be linked to phthalate exposure.

?

?Attempts to link our national obesity problem to minute exposures to chemicals found in common, everyday products are a distraction from efforts to address this important national health issue,? St. John said.

?

Previous studies have linked phthalates to hormone disruption ? including hormones responsible for fat tissue and development of the brain and reproductive system. Trasande said it?s plausible ? though not proven by this study ? that phthalates could contribute to obesity by messing with receptors that metabolize lipids and carbohydrates.

?

One previous study linked phthalates to obesity in children. High phthalate concentrations were associated with increased body mass and waist size in Hispanic and black children aged 6 to 8 in New York City. Phthalates also were linked to adult obesity in a 2007 study.

?

In the new study, it is unclear why there was only a link for black children, but it could be due to their higher concentrations of the chemicals. For the personal care product-type phthalates, black children had levels 81 percent higher than white children, 45 percent higher than Mexican American children and 4 percent higher than other Hispanic children.

?

"One possibility is that different racial/ethnic groups use phthalate-containing shampoos and lotions differently, or use products containing different [phthalate] mixes," says the study, which was published online in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

?

Researchers didn?t see any differences by age groups. And, while the black children had higher levels of phthalates as a whole, the association with obesity happened at relatively low levels of exposure, Trasande said. The study used data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s 2008 nationwide testing of chemicals in people?s bodies.

?

It?s possible black children are simply more exposed, or they metabolize the chemicals differently, said Emily Barrett, a professor at the University of Rochester who studies exposure to environmental chemicals.

Many factors ? including nutrition and stress ? could alter how different children metabolize chemicals, said Jennifer Adibi, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

?

In a study released late last year by Trasande and colleagues, another hormone disrupting chemical ? bisphenol A ? was linked to obesity in only white children.

?

Trasande controlled for diet, television watching, gender and age in the phthalate study. Pinning chemicals to weight gain is a challenge, but the study forces some new thinking about obesity, he said.

?

The next research step is to look at phthalate exposures from fetus to childhood to try to tease out whether the chemicals are contributing to obesity, he said.

?

Adibi said the findings are ?interesting and scary.? While it?s not enough evidence to spur policy changes, she hopes it will reframe the conversations about risks to disadvantaged communities.

?

?This is another reason to increase awareness among low income, African American and Hispanic populations and let them know they?re at an increased risk of exposure to these chemicals and that we?re seeing these associations (with obesity),? Adibi said.

Amazon's latest employee patent won't pay you for unsatisfactory work

Amazon's latest employee patent won't pay you for unsatisfactory work

Jeff Bezos seems like a nice guy with big dreams (and a bigger wallet), but some Amazon patents make us worry that there's a sour cherry at the heart of all that whipped cream. The retailer has been awarded a patent entitled "Facilitating improvement in the results of human performance of tasks," but is actually concerned with not paying potential digital employees if their services are deemed to be unsatisfactory. Those whose efforts are judged and found wanting could have the option of taking a reduced cut of the original fee, or getting computer-aided feedback on how to improve and snag the rest. While we hope this one remains locked inside a Seattle filing cabinet, we can just see how Judge Judy's going to react when people take Mechanical Turk disputes public.

(AP) ? Barbara Walters says she's returning to "The View" on Monday.

She's been sidelined for several weeks. But now she's "had enough rest and it's time to come back," Walters reported by phone during Tuesday's edition of the ABC talk show.

Walters was hospitalized on Jan. 19 after fainting and cutting her head at a party in Washington. The 83-year-old said she had chickenpox and a fever at the time but didn't realize it. She suffered a concussion and got six stitches. She was released 10 days later and since then, has been resting in her New York home.

"No more chickenpox," she told her fellow panelists in the studio during her phone call.

imate talks up the Intelegent, a 47inch slab of vaporware

Don't worry if Dubai-based smartphone maker i-mate had slipped your mind. The business unceremoniously collapsed back in 2009 after allegedly suffering a "major fraud" that led it to fire all of its employees. Fortunately, CEO Jim Morrison is back with a new mobile device that, he claims, runs full-fat Windows 8 in the same way that Ubuntu for Android will behave. The i-mate Intelegent is a 4.7-inch handset running the desktop OS on a Clover Trail CPU with 2GB RAM and 64GB storage. The secret, however, is that the $750 handset will slot into a Webtop-esque desktop dock to become your work machine when you get into the office. Morrison has said that there's a factory in California ready to produce 10,000 units a week, and told the Seattle Times that he'd be showing off the device here at MWC. We can't find it on the exhibitor list, but we're about to go hunting...

LG aims to raise smartphone sales by 52 percent

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? LG Electronics Inc. is aiming to raise its smartphone sales by more than half this year as it makes a shift from basic phones to high-end devices after lagging competitors for several years.

The South Korean company aims to sell more than 40 million smartphones in 2013, it said in a statement on Monday. LG shipped 26.3 million smartphones in 2012, fewer than HTC Corp. and Research In Motion Ltd. which each shipped more than 32 million smartphones.

To meet the sales goal, LG will release handsets in all price ranges from high-tier to affordable models and go all out in both developed and emerging markets.

"We aim to improve profitability and also to become a top-tier smartphone brand," Park Jong-seok, head of LG's mobile phone business, told reporters at a mobile industry fair in Barcelona, according to the statement.

LG faces similar challenges to other second-tier smartphone vendors. They are squeezed by the two smartphone giants ? Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. ? that are dominating most of the profit in the smartphone industry and also by Chinese makers that are expanding in the smartphone markets of fast-growing emerging countries.

But LG hopes to make its Optimus brand stand out by drawing on technologies from other parts of the LG empire. The company is the largest shareholder in LG Display Co. and has collaborated with other LG affiliates on batteries and cameras.

LG was the world's third-largest maker of cellphones in 2009 but was caught off guard by the popularity of smartphones. In the fourth quarter of 2012, LG sold fewer phones than Chinese rivals Huawei Technologies Ltd. and ZTE Corp., which are expanding shipments of their cheaper smartphones.

Its mobile communications division was profitable for the first time in three years last year as it moved its focus from basic phones to lucrative smartphones.

Academy Award Winners 2013: Who Won An Oscar?

The Oscars took place in Los Angeles on Sunday night, with a bevy of Hollywood's top talent being added to the list of Academy Award Winners for 2013.

The top six categories went as such: Best Picture was awarded to "Argo", Best Actor went to Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress, Ang Lee earned Best Directing and Christoph Waltz and Anne Hathaway won the Best Supporting Categories for Actor and Actress, respectively.

Winners are selected by the voting body of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, comprised of industry insiders. That's a marked difference from the Golden Globes, which are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press, or the guilds' awards (Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, Directors Guild), which are awarded by members of a particular profession.

This year's Oscars were hosted by Seth MacFarlane and took place at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre. A number of tributes and performances punctuated the telecast, including a tribute to James Bond and a "Chicago" reunion, as well as a "Les Miserables" bit piece. Barbra Streisand also graced the Oscar stage, as did Ted, the fictional teddy bear MacFarlane made famous in a movie by the same name.

In pre-show interviews, MacFarlane admitted to being nervous about the gig, telling the Associated Press that it was "the hardest job in the world," despite being a "one-off."

More information about winners, performances and more can be found in the live blog below the following gallery.

That's all from the Oscars 2013 live blog here at HuffPost Entertainment! Hope you enjoyed the show. This is Christopher Rosen, signing off.

From backstage at the Oscars:

When did you feel a tipping point in your favor for this film?

Clooney: Michelle Obama.

Ben: When they gave us the trophies I was confident that we would win. I don?t get too much into the Oscar-ology and the pontificating. It doesn?t help me to read up on that stuff.

Backstage at the Oscars with Daniel Day-Lewis:

Was it uncomfortable wearing the beard?

What do you mean? No it's just a beard. Do you wear your hair? It was my very own beard.

From HuffPost Los Angeles correspondent Sasha Bronner:

"A bad word. That starts with F."

Here's Awards Daily blogger Sasha Stone just after "Argo" won Best Picture.

@ AwardsDaily : See, I told you Argo was Crash incarnate. Won the same amount of awards even.

Here's Sasha Stone on "Argo" back in October:

Have you ever seen a movie where you walk out saying, ?That was just a great f--king movie?? That?s Ben Affleck?s Argo. Inexplicably, a film that draws its strength from humor and suspense, winds up being more moving the second time through. Perhaps because once you have been through the suspense part of it you get to know the characters better and therefore care about their outcomes more.
@ LouLumenick : Affleck: Oscar winner to laughingstock to Oscar winner. You can't make these things up.
@ m1keh0gan : Tommy Lee Jones told me Seth MacFarlane was "hilarious." His favorite part? "I Saw Your Boobs." #notkidding
?It?s a strange thing, because three years ago, before we decided to do a straight swap, I had actually been committed to play Margaret Thatcher, um...? he joked. ?And Meryl was, was Steven?s first choice for ?Lincoln.? And I?d like to see that version. And Steven didn?t have to persuade me to play Lincoln, but I had to persuade him that, perhaps, if I was going to do it, that Lincoln shouldn?t be a musical.?

More on Daniel Day-Lewis' Oscar speech here.

The 85th annual Oscars gave audiences plenty to talk about -- from host Seth MacFarlane's "rejected"-but-still-definitely-included "We Saw Your Boobs" number to William Shatner's comment that the Academy should have asked Amy Poehler and Tina Fey to host. (Are they really hosting next year? Don't play with our emotions that way.)

More here from HuffPost Women.

Need to make sense of the Oscars? We've got you covered. From the WHOA to the EEK to the OH NO!, we've rounded up the night's brightest highlights. Because nobody should be the odd man out at the water cooler.

Seth MacFarlane opened the night with a Tommy Lee Jones joke (remember Mr Grumpy Cat?). "The quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh starts now," quipped the host. So ...

Look at Oscar night in GIFs by clicking here.

The 85th annual Academy Awards took a moment Sunday evening to honor a number of late Hollywood greats. The memoriam nodded to an extraordinary group, including Nora Ephron and Richard Zanuck. However, one actor was noticeably absent from the list.

Andy Griffith wasn't mentioned in the Oscars' In Memoriam segment. More here.

@ brooksbarnesNYT : Reporter to Jennifer Lawrence, "Are you worried about peaking too soon?" She makes a face and pauses. "Well, now I am!"

From HuffPost Women:

We learned a few things: Seth MacFarlane likes boobs. Seth MacFarlane thinks eating disorders are funny. And Seth MacFarlane's one-liners would make the worst pick-up lines ever.

More here on Seth MacFarlane's Oscar night.

Pretty great. David Rothschild, who spearheaded our Oscars Prediction Dashboard weighs in:

This is a spectacular result ? The Oscars are always billed as ?unpredictable? and that is especially true down the line for the more obscure categories ? 19 out of 24 correct is a testament to scientific predictions

More on the Oscars tie that occurred in the Best Sound Editing category:

Although it is rare, Oscars ties have happened before.

In 1932, Frederic March won the Best Actor award for "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and tied with Wallace Beery for "The Champ" because Beery only beat him by one single vote, Slate notes. The rules allowed for a one vote difference to be called a tie back then, while today it must be the exact same.

Relive the most awkward moment of Jennifer Lawrence's life:

jennifer lawrence falls oscars

More on Michelle Obama's Oscar appearance:

"[These films] taught us that love can beat all odds," Obama said. "They reminded us that we can overcome any obstacle if we dig deep enough and fight hard enough and find the courage within ourselves."

The 2013 Oscars are over. "Life of PI" led with four wins, including Best Director for Ang Lee. "Argo" and "Les Miserables" had three wins. "Django Unchained" and "Lincoln" earned two.

@ kateyrich : Poor Bradley Cooper, knowing they pre-wrote a musical number about how he's a loser.

Seth MacFarlane and Kristen Chenoweth sing a song about the losers at the Oscars. Surely this will go over well in the room.

"Argo," Ang Lee, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Christoph Waltz and Anne Hathaway were 2013 Oscar winners. Here's the full list.

Affleck, who was snubbed for Best Director, gives a long but thoughtful acceptance speech. More on the historic "Argo" Oscar win here:

The 2013 Academy Award for Best Picture was awarded to Hollywood's favorite film: "Argo." Oscar looked good in Ben Affleck's hand, especially as the star was notably snubbed in the Best Directing category.

He thanks Ben Affleck, who directed a "helluva film." He then introduces Affleck.

"Thank you very, very much." Affleck acknowledges Steven Spielberg and the other films.

Michelle Obama announces "Argo" as Best Picture.

Jack knows better than to mess with Michelle Obama.

Ditch the commercial sports drinks and artificial protein bars - Try economical, nourishing and handmade varieties instead

(NaturalNews) In a rather sad and ironic state of affairs, individuals exercising to improve health and fitness often fall into the trap of neon colored sport drinks and sugary protein bars with questionable ingredients -- believing these products support ultimate vitality and strength. Unfortunately, these 'foods' compromise true health and also tend to rack up a hefty grocery bill. But making your own at home is far easier than you might imagine and affordable to boot. Most sport enhancement foods contain odd ingredients that insidiously destroy health. High fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors, fractionated palm kernel oil, genetically modified organisms and, unbelievably, flame retardant in the form of brominated vegetable oil are frequently found in sport recovery/endurance products. The problem is, these foods are convenient -- just grab and go. So often we sacrifice health (and taste) for a quick boost. Yet, there is a painless resolution to this dilemma: Make your own and save your cash, health and taste buds. The Chicago Tribune article, "Sports drinks: How to make your own," offers several simple, inexpensive recipes for recovery drinks. According to registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner, refueling beverages need three elements: water, electrolytes and carbohydrates. Just make sure to use purified water, organic ingredients and high quality Himalayan or Celtic sea salt for maximum nutritional benefit.

Electrolyte replacement drink from Yoga Journal

4 cups hot water
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
2 tsp honey
1/4 tsp salt

Combine all ingredients and chill before consuming.

Organic sports drink from Kitchen Table Medicine

Organic fruit juice

Water or green tea

Organic sea salt

Fill sports bottle with half juice and half water. Add a pinch of sea salt and shake.

Thrive sports drink (Raw)

Juice of 1/2 lemon
Juice of 1/4 lime
3 dates
2 cups water
1 Tsp agave nectar
1 tsp coconut oil
Sea salt to taste

Place all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.

In addition, unsweetened coconut water with a pinch of sea salt is a basic, electrolyte-rich recovery drink.

Now, onto the protein bars. Here we can really get creative. Anna Sward of Protein Pow(d)er offers the following recommendations and recipes:

"For each recipe below, bind the powder, flour and other ingredients with milk [coconut, almond or hemp varieties are healthy choices]. You can also use a nut butter. The goal is to have a batter that comes together like a dough which can be easily formed into bars. Next, melt 90-100 percent dark chocolate over low heat -- enough to coat the bars, about 40 grams. Once coated, place the bars in the freezer for at least 30 minutes."

Again, organic ingredients are recommended.

Orange and goji berry whey protein bars

1/2 cup organic, unflavored or vanilla whey protein power
3/4 cup ground almonds
1/4 cup coconut flour
3/4 cup goji berries
1/4 cup coconut milk
1 Tsp vanilla essence
1 Tsp grated orange rind
1 tsp of chili power

The incredible red velvet pumpkin seed protein bars

2 small cooked beets
1/2 cup of vanilla whey
1/4 cup of coconut flour
1/4 cup of milk
1 Tsp organic pumpkin seed butter (or peanut or almond butter)

Using the recipes above as a foundation, it's easy to play and experiment, modify and adapt handmade protein bars and sports drinks to fit specific tastes and needs. We are also liberated from expensive and bizarre products. In the end, it's an economical, nutritious and tasty win-win solution.

Pope Benedict XVI and the road not taken (+video)

At one point, the young?Joseph Ratzinger looked like a budding church reformer. By the time he abdicated as pope this week, he had become one of the stoutest defenders of Catholic tradition.

By the time Pope Benedict XVI made his surprise announcement to abdicate, his image had become fixed as one of the stoutest defenders of tradition and an arch-enemy of change, liberality, and the reforming intent of the Vatican II council. But at the start of his career, he looked as if he might be a budding reformer himself. ?

The pope, then Joseph Ratzinger, collaborated on changes during Vatican II with Karl Rahner, a Jesuit star from Munich who in the 1970s was talked about as pope material in liberal circles. Mr. Rahner advocated women?s ordination, supported seekers in churches outside the Catholic faith, and his theology arced more toward a universal spirituality than institutional rules, emphasizing ?a?human search for meaning ? rooted in the unlimited horizon of God?s own being experienced within the world.?

The young Ratzinger in the 1960s was brought to Tubingen University partly by Catholic theologian Hans Kung (later censored for views bordering on heresy) and taught in a progressive Protestant-Catholic faculty.?

Ratzinger's first faculty lecture at Tubingen, eagerly awaited and still remembered today, stressed the importance of the interpretation of the Bible via church fathers of the pre-medieval era, at a time of relative excitement in scholarly circles over new "subjective" and "spiritual" interpretations of scripture. Mr. Kung was disappointed, his colleagues remember.?

Later in the mid-1960s Ratzinger experienced student campus protests firsthand. For a shy scholar whose vision of church was hewn in the clean and well-ordered Alpine villages of Bavaria ? the experience deeply soured him on change as well as the often excessive experiments of Vatican II to open the church up "to the modern world," as the saying went.?

Vatican II was heady days at a time of ferment, but neither Ratzinger nor the church he eventually led, ever made the leap. Faced with a changing world, Benedict opted for a church of greater purity and reliance on past traditions ??even as his tenure will be marked by a priestly child abuse scandal that two years ago was described as the biggest challenge faced by Rome since the Reformation.

Yesterday Vatican officials affirmed the outgoing Benedict will not personally direct the choice of his successor. But the outgoing pontiff has been so instrumental in shaping the policies and personnel of the Roman Catholic church that his presence won?t matter, analysts say.

For 24 years Benedict, as Cardinal Ratzinger, ruled the roost in the Vatican as Pope John Paul II?s enforcer, the powerful head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and he has overseen a tightening, not a loosening, of church doctrine.

Since 2005 he further consolidated power as pope. So the conclave of cardinals and bishops meeting in Rome next month are there precisely due to their loyalty to Benedict?s vision of the Roman church.

The effect of Benedict?s reign as pope in this sense cannot be understated.

To take one example: In recent years under direct Vatican influence one of the largest Benedictine training schools in the US has, against the sentiment of its teaching clergy, been forced to disallow males and females to study in classes together. So the "Benedict effect" is not something found only in books and encyclicals; it has had an effect?"on the ground," as one Benedictine theologian reports, off the record.?

In a church still quite divided on moral issues, sexuality, modernity, the concept of priest, and so on, it is unclear whether the pope?s resignation, itself an unusual break from the past, may lead to other changes.

Benedict oversaw a 2,000-year-old church with an all-male hierarchy that struggled to respond to a child abuse and pedophilia scandal that reached new excesses two years ago on both sides of the Atlantic during the "year of the priest."

The German pope did not create what some hoped would be a ?Benedict generation? with his robust defense of church doctrines and a controversial return to a more traditional liturgy. While?some conservative religious orders have seen some new applicants in the US, the overall numbers remain a far-cry from those before 1960. Instead, church issues among youth seem pressing, at least in the post-modern West that Benedict had hoped to appeal to with a new Catholic moment. If that moment never comes, says?one New York-based Jesuit, ?The church is going to go one way and the rest of us are going to go another.?

The child abuse scandal, which many dissidents in the church say is a result of the policies of all-male clergy and celibacy (the Vatican denies this) did allow, however briefly, space for different voices to be heard, and for issues treated by church fathers as settled for all time, to be raised.

The issues run from sex and gender to spiritual authority inside the church. They track the shrinking of Mass attendance in the West, the sharp downturn of youth desiring to be priests, and the angry reaction of females (again in the US and Britain) who see roles as clergy closed off when in many churches they are the most faithful.

In the midst of the priestly child abuse scandal, the church issued a circular that put women?s ordination into the same category of disciplinary crimes as heresy, pedophilia, and promoting schism.?Benedict was given credit for suggesting that wearing a condom is acceptable in certain odd cases, such as that of a male prostitute. But with many Catholics no longer even following church teaching on condoms, and with the pope visiting Africa and talking about abstinence and no wearing of condoms, many can?t relate.

The pedophile cases also sparked what many Catholics say is a need for a greater spiritual awakening in a church that has placed a great emphasis on institutional authority; they placed a critical focus on old assumptions that male priests, through the act of their ordination, are holier or more spiritually endowed than ordinary members of the laity.

The British newspaper The Guardian pointed out in an editorial that it could not find a single current liberal candidate for pope, and quoted from Carlo Maria Martini, a cardinal, who said before passing last year that, ?The church is tired in Europe and America. Our culture has aged, our churches are large, our religious houses are empty, and the bureaucracy of the church climbs higher, our rituals and our clothes are pompous?[the church] must recognize her mistakes and must follow a path of radical change, starting with the pope and the bishops.?

Yet many following the daily operations of the Holy See feel there is unlikely to be any revolutionary ?Papal Spring.? Some reform-minded Catholics and many who have left the church say the Vatican is so deeply into the wrong questions, and has been relying so heavily on those who are not interested in questioning in the first place, that any positive reforms will only be on the margins.?

Hubble sees a glowing jet from a young star

Feb. 24, 2013 ? The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image showing an object known as HH 151, a bright jet of glowing material trailed by an intricate, orange-hued plume of gas and dust.

It is located some 460 light-years away in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull), near to the young, tumultuous star HL Tau.

In the first few hundred thousand years of life, new stars like HL Tau pull in material that falls towards them from the surrounding space. This material forms a hot disc that swirls around the coalescing body, launching narrow streams of material from its poles. These jets are shot out at speeds of several hundred kilometers (or miles) per second and collide violently with nearby clumps of dust and gas, creating wispy, billowing structures known as Herbig-Haro objects -- like HH 151 seen in the image.

Such objects are very common in star-forming regions. They are short-lived, and their motion and evolution can actually be seen over very short timescales, on the order of years. They quickly race away from the newly-forming star that emitted them, colliding with new clumps of material and glowing brightly before fading away.

Louisville withholds allegations vs. former Miami Hurricanes assistant coach Clint Hurtt

The University of Miami?s NCAA saga stretched into another day Friday, with few developments publicly revealed.

The University of Louisville still is withholding the Notice of Allegations for former UM football assistant coach Clint Hurtt, whose allegations have been received, Louisville acknowledged earlier this week.

Louisville is a public school and by law is required to distribute the information to those who formally make a public records request.

A source close to Hurtt told The Miami Herald that he will be fighting some of the allegations. His athletic director, Tom Jurich, defended Hurtt?s character this week, saying, ?Since Clint?s been here, he has never done an iota wrong. ? He?s been exemplary here. He?s done a great job. He?s never bent a rule here, let along broke one. To me, he?s earned a lot of equity from that.?

A conference call that had been scheduled for Friday with the NCAA?s Committee on Infractions took place in the morning, according to a Miami Herald source. Former Miami basketball assistant coaches Jake Morton and Jorge Fernandez, as well as former football wide receivers coach Aubrey Hill, filed a motion asking for their individual cases to be tossed out because of the botched NCAA investigation, The Associated Press reported. The AP cited an unnamed source indicating the Committee on Infractions agreed to ?consider the request? of the three former UM assistants, adding that the hearing would be held during the originally scheduled June14-15 dates, not in July.

Also on Friday, UM Board of Trustees chair Leonard Abess had a letter that he authored published in the Opinion section of The Miami Herald, on behalf of the UM trustees.

?Despite the often unwieldy investigation, the [UM], at President [Donna] Shalala?s and the Board of Trustees? insistence, has held itself to the highest standards in its model cooperation with the NCAA,?? Abess wrote. ??While I believe that the [UM] will emerge stronger and more committed than ever to the letter and the spirit in which the NCAA?s rules of conduct were established, the trustees respectfully, but firmly, add our own voice to President Shalala?s in asking that no further sanctions be imposed ??

The Chromebook Pixel might be the new Linux ultrabook you're waiting for

Linux on the Pixel

After the announcement of the Chromebook Pixel yesterday, a lot of people were in love with the hardware, but thought the price tag was a bit high for a machine running Chrome OS. I'm in that camp as well. I think the hardware is mostly worth the price tag (a 256GB SSD would affirm that in a big way), but can't justify the price for a machine running Chrome OS the way things are now.

We're pretty sure the Pixel is a portent of big things to come for Chrome OS, but just in case, here's a full blown version of Linux Mint running on the sexy thing. Bill Richardson, Chrome OS software engineer at Google, shows it off and gives fairly easy to understand instructions to do it yourself in his Google+ feed.

With devices shipping out today, things might get pretty interesting next week if you've been looking for a high-end Linux ultrabook.

Sandy Rats Drive Family Out of Home | NBC New York

A Long Island family relieved that its home was only minimally damaged by Sandy is now dealing with an unimaginable consequence of the storm -- a sudden invasion of rats that have torn large holes in the walls, chewed furniture and left droppings and paw prints in their path.

The Panzas' Bellmore house had minor flooding damage after the October storm, but last month, the family started seeing evidence of the large toothy rodents.

And then a contractor discovered what he said was a rat nest in the home's attic.?

"It's nice and warm. This is the perfect habitat for them," said contractor Anthony Pomponio, as he shined a light on one rat hole in the attic.?

Some of the rodents that have settled into the house are estimated to be as long as 1 foot and as heavy as a pound, according to the family's?exterminator.

Rats Infesting Brooklyn Cars After Sandy

In one Brooklyn neighborhood, an auto garage says rats are hiding out under hoods and chewing through cables, and there's been a spike in rodent-related car troubles. Marc Santia reports.

Rat-Related Calls Surge in NYC After Sandy: Exterminators

When Sandy flooded Lower Manhattan, many New Yorkers left their homes. So did the rats. Andrew Siff explains.

More Photos and Videos

NBC 4 New York spotted rat prints in powder sprinkled near the family's garage door, along with candy wrappers that homeowner Chris Panza said were carried in by the rodents.

The rats have been so invasive that?Panza's wife and children have moved out.

"Your kids are playing on the floor, playing video games, and to think there are rats within 2 feet of them -- I want them out of here," said Chris Panza.

Panza only started noticing the rat trails last month, when he discovered that one of his couches was being eaten away.

Contractor Dave Hall, who also inspected the home, believes it's a result of Sandy, saying that when the floodwater reached the steps of the Panza home, it drove the rats inside from neighboring sewer pipes.?

"Once they got in here, they realized it's nice and warm and there's food, and they decided to stay," said Hall.?

Panza's exterminator, Orkin, estimated there were up to 14 rats in the home. So far, the rats have eluded capture, even stealing salami and other treats left on traps in nearly every corner of the house.

"They are crafty creatures," said Chris Panza.

The experts have told them that in?order to get rid of the rats, workers must tear down nearly every wall in the home, at a cost of up to $50,000.?

Panza is hoping his federal flood insurance will pay for the work but a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute said that's far from a certainty.

"My big fear is, we'll do all this work and we won't get them all," Panza said.?

Singer Morrissey will not get meat-free concert in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - British vegetarian rock singer Morrissey's concert in Los Angeles next week will be a little more meaty than the former Smiths frontman had initially hoped.

The longtime animal rights activist said earlier this week he had urged the Staples Center arena to close the concessions of fast-food chain McDonald's and to halt the sale of meat by other outlets at the venue for his March 1 performance there.

Morrissey's representatives said in a statement on Monday that Staples Center had agreed to the request, and they added it would the first time that all vendors within and around the Los Angeles venue would be 100 percent vegetarian.

But Staples Center arena operator Anschutz Entertainment Group, or AEG, said on Thursday that meat would still be on menus.

"As of right now, there will be meat options for fans," Staples Center spokeswoman Cara Vanderhook told Reuters.

It was unclear how the apparent confusion arose.

AEG will also roll out a special line of meatless food concessions for fans, including vegan sloppy Joes, vegan sushi, and hummus and pita bread.

The animal rights pressure group PETA recently named Staples Center as the most vegetarian-friendly venue in professional basketball. The National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers play their home games at the arena.

Morrissey, 53, who co-wrote The Smiths' 1985 song "Meat Is Murder," postponed a series of concerts on his North America tour last month after being hospitalized for a bleeding ulcer.

The singer is expected to relaunch the tour with a performance on U.S. late-night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" next week.

In rich and poor nations, giving makes people feel better than getting, research finds

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Feeling good about spending money on someone else rather than for personal benefit may be a universal response among people in both impoverished countries and rich nations, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

"Our findings suggest that the psychological reward experienced from helping others may be deeply ingrained in human nature, emerging in diverse cultural and economic contexts," said lead author Lara Aknin, PhD, of Simon Fraser University in Canada.

The findings provide the first empirical evidence that "the warm glow" of spending on someone else rather than on oneself may be a widespread component of human psychology, the authors reported in the study published online in APA's Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Researchers found a positive relationship between personal well-being and spending on others in 120 of 136 countries covered in the 2006-2008 Gallup World Poll. The survey comprised 234,917 individuals, half of whom were male, with an average age of 38. The link between well-being and spending on others was significant in every region of the world, and it was not affected by other factors among those surveyed, such as income, social support, perceived freedom and perceived national corruption, the study said.

The results were similar in several experiments the researchers themselves conducted with participants in wealthy and poor countries. For one analysis, they compared responses from 820 individuals recruited mostly from universities in Canada and Uganda. The participants wrote about a time they had either spent money on themselves or on others, after which they were asked to report how happy they felt. They were also asked if they spent money on another person to build or strengthen a relationship. People who remembered spending money on someone else felt happier than those who recalled spending money on themselves, even when the researchers controlled for the extent to which people built or strengthened a relationship, according to the study.

The researchers obtained the same results when they conducted an online survey of 101 adults in India. Some respondents were asked to recall recently spending money on themselves or someone else, while others were tested for their happiness level without recalling past spending. Those who recalled spending on someone else said they had a greater feeling of well-being than those who remembered spending on themselves or those who weren't asked about spending.

In another experiment, 207 university students in Canada and South Africa reported higher levels of well-being after purchasing a goody bag for a sick child rather than buying one for themselves. Both groups went to labs where they were given a small amount of money and told to buy a bag of treats for themselves or one for a child at a local hospital.

"From an evolutionary perspective, the emotional benefits that people experience when they help others acts to encourage generous behavior beneficial to long-term human survival," said Aknin.

Newt transcriptome offers insight into tissue regeneration

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Scientists have identified protein families expressed during tissue regeneration in newts, providing the groundwork for research into whether particular sets of genes are used for the purpose. The transcriptome ? the map of all RNA molecules ? of the newt is published this week in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology. Notophthalmus viridescens is a useful model in regenerative medicine, thanks to its ability to regenerate tissue, and this data gives insights into the mechanisms behind this process.

N. viridescens, the common newt, is native to North America, and an urodelian amphibian. Newt and salamander genomes are enormous; currently too big to sequence, but their potential to regenerate entire limbs, along with parts of the central nervous system, has fascinated scientists for over 200 years. Thomas Braun, Thilo Borchardt at the Max Planck Institutes, Patagonis Tsonis at the University of Dayton and their colleagues sequenced a collection of healthy and regenerated tissues from newts, and converged them into one comprehensive transcriptome. Their analysis identified 826 proteins specific for urodeles, and several newly identified proteins that they believe may play important roles in regeneration process unique for urodeles. Their data also outline genes that appear only in regenerating, but not uninjured material, which will be of interest in regenerative medicine.

The transcriptome is not complete, but serves as a matrix for further analyses. The authors believe that their findings represent only the tip of the iceberg: 'Our data provide the groundwork for mechanistic experiments to answer the question whether urodeles utilize proprietary sets of genes for tissue regeneration.' They continue: 'The newly established de novo transcriptome [...] will be an indispensable resource for a better understanding of regenerative events in newts and facilitate the identifications of molecules [...] that control this fascinating process.'
