Senior Care Pittsburgh | Home Often the Best Retirement Haven

by Lucy Novelly on 06/22/2012

Many older adults fear they will lose their independence as they are age. If you?re one of those seniors, take heart. More options than ever exist for seniors who want to remain in control of their living situations. Top on the list ? most seniors say ? is remaining at home.

Q.? It?s been about a year since my dear wife passed away, and I?ve been living by myself for the first time in 69 years. My comfortable old home just seems so big right now, but I am reluctant to move out. Some of my friends say I ought to consider a change of scenery. What are my options?

When you and your contemporaries were growing up, reaching retirement age probably meant that you moved in with one of your adult children or went straight to a care home. It?s not that way anymore. The good news is the options are many.

You could buy a smaller home, rent a house or live in one of many types of group settings. Your situation doesn?t necessarily call for a move to a care community.

According to industry surveys, most seniors share your sentiment. Nearly 90 percent of older adults say they want to continue to live in their own homes. There are a lot of things to consider and a lot of options nowadays.

You should check out your choices in a U.S. government publication,??Housing Options for Older Adults.? Included is a list of questions that may be helpful in making a decision:

  • What kind of lifestyle do I want? What will my living conditions be like?
  • How important is my choice of location? How close would I like to be to family and friends, doctors, pharmacies, other medical facilities, shopping, senior centers, religious facilities and other amenities?
  • Does my current health status require that I look for features that will help me move about more comfortably?
  • How much will the housing option cost?
  • What, if any, in? home support services will I receive for my money?
  • Am I eligible for any publicly funded or subsidized services, such as Medicare or Medicaid?
  • What in? home support services are available now, and in the future, to meet my health and social needs?
  • Have I involved family members and friends in my decision ?making, as appropriate?
  • What role will others have in making these decisions?
  • Would it be advisable for me to talk with an attorney so that I understand my rights and any legal concerns?

If you don?t have a major health problem that needs constant attention and you just need a little assistance, you might consider home care. A Home Instead CAREGiverSM could help with light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminder, errands, shopping and companionship.

The Eldercare Locator, a free service of the U.S. Administration on Aging, could be a first step to finding resources. Learn more about Home Instead Senior Care?.

Woody plants taking over grasslands around the globe

TEMPE, Ariz. The Earth's grasslands and savannas are experiencing a major transformation as woody plants, such as trees and shrubs, have begun to dominate arid lands around the globe. While ecologists document this dramatic change in vegetation considered by many to be desertification, or a deterioration of the environment researchers at Arizona State University suggest these changes may not be completely detrimental.

In a new two-year investigation funded by the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative, ASU scientists will study the effects of woody-plant encroachment on multiple ecosystems. They will collect data from grasslands in Kansas and New Mexico, as well as use existing, collected data.

"Is this really degradation or is it simply a change in the portfolio of services the ecosystem is providing?" asks Osvaldo Sala, professor of ecology and sustainability in ASU's School of Life Sciences and School of Sustainability. "If the second is true, there may be a shift among stakeholders who win and who lose as a result of this change."

Ecosystem services are basically the things ecosystems provide to humans such as food, wood, fiber, conservation, recreation, carbon storage and clean water. These services are often compromised when drastic environmental transformation occurs.

Woody-plant encroachment of arid lands is a phenomenon occurring around the world from the United States to Africa, and from South America to China. In an ongoing effort to try to restore arid lands to their previous states, the U.S. government is using herbicides and machinery to eradicate shrubs and trees and spending millions of dollars to do so.

The Arizona State University scientists suggest findings from this study may add new information to the current controversy over whether this is effective land management.

"We'll be using an interdisciplinary approach to identify several things," said Sala. "We need to understand the effects of woody-plant encroachment and the consequences of what is happening from an ecological, economic, and social perspective. And, we need to understand how these changes vary around the world. Once we understand that, our findings may suggest how to manage our grasslands to meet different stakeholders needs. We can try to push the change back, or we can try to take advantage of the good things and mitigate the bad."

The Keck Futures Initiative grant is aimed at filling a critical gap in funding for research on new ideas. With the $75,000 award, researchers will assess nine ecosystem services provided by grasslands both before and after woody plants began taking over. They will specifically study tallgrass prairie in Kansas and the Chihuahuan Desert grassland in New Mexico.

Sala, who is the Julie A. Wrigley Chair and Foundation Professor, and a Distinguished Sustainability Scientist with the Global Institute of Sustainability, will begin research with his team this fall.

Scientists working with Sala include Billie Turner, professor in the ASU School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, and School of Sustainability; and Elena Bennett, assistant professor at McGill University.

'Lived-in' look leads to landlord nightmare | The Michigan Lawyer

image

[Screencap taken from CBSDFW.com video]

Upon moving to a new home, I?ve heard many people loudly proclaim that they aren?t selling their old one because they?ll just rent it out and make money off of it. Many times, they wind up with a crash course in landlord-tenant law when their tenant turns out to be something less than ideal.

A woman in Texas was sitting on a McMansion she was trying to sell after moving back to Boston. She didn?t want to keep the house, but had a hard time selling it.

Her realtor had a great idea: give the home a more ?lived-in? feel by hiring a company to temporarily place a family. And by family, I?m sure the landowner was thinking Mom, Dad, Connor, Tucker and Chloe, a tricycle on the front walk and may even a sandbox in the back.

Instead, she got the Evil Clampetts. [CBSDFW.com]?

The tenants were supposed to be two brothers. But then they invited the whole family to move in. Then they brought in a? pitbull, despite the lease forbidding pets. Then they parked a pickup on the grass that leaked oil on the lawn. Finally, they started planting crucifixes everywhere, including one that was 10 feet tall.

In other words, this house wasn?t selling.

She had wanted lived in, and she got it. She complained that the crosses violated homeowner association laws. They claimed they were being discriminated against on religious grounds and threatened to go to the Department of Justice.

So just evict them, right? They violated the terms of the deal by having the dog and other family members move in.

She and the company filed for eviction of the family. The brothers left ? but Dear Old Dad ? the trunk on that family tree ? isn?t going anywhere.

It doesn?t matter, [Nathan] Burgess told CBS 11, that he wasn?t expected to be in the home in the first place. He was ?invited? by his sons, he said, before the eviction order came down.

?Sometimes, I?ve learned, you can?t run from things. You just have to hit em head on,? Burgess said.

He said he would have likely moved out with the rest of his family if Aji and Castle Keepers had been nice about it.

?They call and said, ?Oh, you have a dog on the property.? Ever since then, the level of abuse has gotten worse and worse,? Burgess said.

Burgess is vowing to exhaust all appeals before he leaves, like he?s on death row or something.

When the listing agent brought in a prospective buyer, they were met with a sign instructing them that the house is occupied and that nothing is to be touched.

The house was eventually removed from the market while the eviction mess is sorted out. She claims that neither she, nor her agent, can go into the house until it?s sorted out.

Google to pay $0 in damages to Oracle, wait for appeal

After watching Judge Alsup strike down its patent and Java API infringement claims, Oracle seems to be cutting its losses, agreeing to accept $0 in damages from Google. Confused? So was the Judge, who reportedly responded to the proposal by asking, "is there a catch I need to be aware of?" No catch, but Oracle isn't giving up, stating that it's taking its case to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. If successful, the appeal could put the two firms back in Alsup's courtroom, perhaps asking for somewhere between the previously proposed $32.3 million and today's sum total of zilch. We'll let you know when the drama comes around again.

A new application for devices with Android operating systems, called OnTheBus, helps people find their way and move around in large cities. The application is based on universal design principles and is therefore useful for any person interested in travelling around a big city, and especially for people with visual, hearing or cognitive impairments.

The application, already available at Google Play, offers a set of optimal routes users can choose from. Once one of the routes is chosen, the application guides users from where they are located to the nearest bus stop and informs them of the time remaining until their bus arrives. Inside the bus, the application informs on the number of stops and signals the user when it is time to press the button and get off the bus. It then guides users to their destination. The system uses the newest technologies available for mobile devices such as GPS, compass, accelerometer, voice recognition and generation, and 3G or WiFi connection.

Currently, it can be used in Barcelona, Madrid and Rome, and will soon be available for the cities of Valencia, Zaragoza and Helsinki. The application is offered in Spanish, Catalan, English and Italian; new versions in other languages and for other cities are also being prepared.

Researchers are already working on improving the application by including other public transport means and more basic services such as finding taxis, the nearest chemist's or assistance centres, using augmented reality techniques to locate stop signs and public transport stops, as well as the integration of social networks.

    ###

The application was developed by the GABiTAP group (Biomedical Applications and Technologies for Personal Autonomy Group) of the UAB, co-directed by Dr Jordi Roig de Zrate of the Department of Microelectronics and Electronic Systems.

Greek election will weigh on Wall Street

    ?

    By Caroline Valetkevitch, Reuters

Updated 3:46 p.m. EDT: NEW YORK --?In addition to backyard barbecues and beer, this Father's Day could see many investors with their minds on Greece.?

The Greek election -- the Sunday event that has the attention of the world's financial markets -- is expected to create volatility in the new trading week, in particular, for U.S. stocks, according to analysts and investors.?

"I think the S&P futures will see their high or low depending on the outcome within one hour of the futures' opening on Sunday night at 6 p.m. Eastern time," said Elliot Spar, an options market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus & Co.?

The pro-bailout New Democracy party came in first Sunday and could gather enough support to form a pro-bailout coalition to keep the country in the euro?zone.

Analysts have viewed the Greek election as a potential turning point for Greece, with all eyes on whether voters would favor the leftist Syriza party opposed to the austerity measures that are part and parcel of Greece's international bailout package, or the conservative New Democracy, which ?committed to upholding terms of that agreement.?

The election?is also seen as another hurdle for the wider euro zone, which has been embroiled in a debt crisis for well over a year.?

Central banks from major economies are ready to take steps to calm financial markets should the outcome of the Greek elections create a market storm.?

A more bearish outcome would be one that presages an unraveling of the euro zone, said Peterson, whose firm starting reducing its exposure to European assets "over a year and a half ago."

The rest of the week is not likely to be any quieter. The Federal Reserve is due to release a policy statement on Wednesday at the end of its two-day meeting, and the steady flow of sovereign debt warnings and downgrades is likely to continue.

In yet another sign of investor nervousness, the CBOE Volatility index, Wall Street's fear gauge, was up for much of Friday, even as stocks rose, although the VIX finally closed lower. Stocks and the VIX typically have an inverse relationship.

Many investors have been trying to prepare for the worst.

"People have been hedging their positions aggressively over the past two weeks heading into this weekend," said Alec Levine, a derivatives strategist at Newedge Group SA in New York.

"No matter what happens (this) week, we will return to a massive game of chicken between the newly elected Greek government, whoever that may be, and the EU, specifically Germany."

Despite the fears, stocks ended the week on a positive note, marking a second straight week of gains. The benchmark Standard & Poor's index is now up 6.8 percent for 2012, though still well off its highest levels of the year.

Part of what has spurred optimism for stock investors in recent weeks has been the hope that the Fed and other central banks would act to provide more economic stimulus. There has been continuing speculation over whether the Fed will engage in a third round of quantitative easing.

"We do think that expectations of QE3 will drive the market one way or the other," said Omar Aguilar, chief investment officer for equities at Charles Schwab Corp, in San Francisco.

But the fact that the Fed has made no recent changes to policy could mean the economic data policymakers are seeing is "not as bad as everyone thinks," Aguilar said.

Weeks of worries over potential outcomes of the Greek election have prompted a number of central banks to prepare for market problems.

Among them, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said the ECB was ready to step in and fund any viable euro zone bank that gets in trouble. The Bank of England on Thursday announced a $155 billion (100 billion pound) offer of loans to banks.

Also ahead of the vote, Russell Indexes said certain events in Greece could mean changes in its indexes through implementation of its "financial crisis" rule. Its indexes include the Russell Global Index.

Adding to investor nervousness has been a slew of recent ratings cuts.

Among the most recent, Fitch Ratings on Friday downgraded Egypt's sovereign credit rating deeper into junk status. On Thursday, Egan-Jones cut France's sovereign credit rating.

Many investors see that trend continuing as agencies try to gauge the impact of the euro zone and other problems on the global economy.

"We're probably going to see more of it," Peterson said.?

There have been a number of sites that offer Mixtapes for a price. These sites allow you to upload your own Music thus creating an avenue of business for those interested in music. The artist has uploaded their songs to their web page on some kind of document sharing server. We may straight obtain these files to our computer.

Rappers began to take matters in their own hands; working directly with DJ's to create artist-specific tapes of original material. These days, mixtape DJs rarely blend or scratch on the tapes, and instead play more of a host's role. Some of this year's biggest rap singles found their footing on Mixtapes, that includes Drake's successful Music's. Drake is a Canadian recording artist and actor. After the success, Drake decided to release a retail version of the mixtape in the form of an extended play, including the song. Listening to latest mixtape releases will make you realize that there are many small-tie artists out there who deserve to be known more.

Clay Guida?s hair won?t be flying free on Friday

UFC lightweight Clay Guida is as known for his hair as he is for his unlimited cardio and ability to withstand a punch. However, it won't be flying free on Friday when he faces Gray Maynard in Atlantic City. After a request from Maynard's camp to the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, Guida's hair will be braided back.

Though Guida usually fights with his long, curly locks flowing free and doesn't want to put his hair back, he also doesn't want a disagreement over hair to distract him before the fight. His manager said Guida plans to comply, which means the two sides won't have to go through a hearing.

"He doesn't want to do it, and I don't believe he's 100 percent happy about it, but he's being very understanding and very cooperative about it and he agreed to it," Nick Lembo of the New Jersey commission told MMAjunkie.com. "Otherwise, if he said, 'No, I'm not going to do that,' we'd have to have a hearing on it and let both sides present their case and have a commissioner's ruling on the issue."

Guida's hair has often been the topic of discussion. When the UFC's first video game came out, Guida was not included because the game's designers couldn't recreate his hair in video game form. UFC president Dana White offered Guida $10,000 to cut his hair, but he said to add a few zeroes on the number.

"The hair's here to? stay. It's part of my style, part of my trademark," Guida told Cagewriter in 2009.

Guida's hair flies around when he fights. He often has to push it out of his face as he is fighting. Because it moves every time he is punched or kicked, it can actually give his opponents an advantage. Judges can more easily tell when Guida gets hit, usually giving his opponent an advantage.

But as Guida said, his hair is his trademark. Taking it away may not be about a physical advantage, but a mental one. Maynard's camp may be engaged in a bit of gamesmanship.

Saudi Arabia's next in line to throne dies

    Hassan Ammar / AP

Saudi crown prince and interior minister Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz al-Saud drinks coffee and welcomes Gulf Arab leaders taking part in the Gulf Cooperation Council summit on May 14.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 8:10 a.m. ET: RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -?Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, the hardline interior minister who spearheaded Saudi Arabia's fierce crackdown crushing al-Qaida's branch in the country after the 9/11 attacks in the United States and then rose to become next in line to the throne, has died. He was in his late 70s.

Nayef, interior minister since 1970, was the heir to Saudi King Abdullah and was appointed crown prince in October after the death of his elder brother and predecessor in the role, Crown Prince Sultan.

    ?

He had been in Switzerland since May for medical tests. ?No details were released about his illness.?

Nayef had a reputation as a steely conservative who opposed King Abdullah's reforms and developed a formidable security infrastructure that crushed al-Qaida but also locked up some political activists.

Jane Kinninmont, London-based?Chatham House's senior research fellow in the Middle East and North Africa program, told msnbc.com that a pillar of the old authoritarian order in the Middle East would had gone with Nayef's death, adding:

"Prince Nayef was the most powerful conservative force in Saudi Arabia, running the interior ministry, the internal security forces and the religious police. He was opposed to women voting or driving. The next in line to the throne, Prince Salman, is seen as a more liberal figure, and is a bit younger, but it's all relative -- he's in his 60s rather than late 70s. Don't expect any radical change coming from the new crown prince -- more a subtle shift of tone."

The big question is who will be the third in line to the throne -- do they keep passing this role around the increasingly elderly sons of the first Saudi king, or choose someone from the younger generation? The family is huge and full of rivalries and they are likely to be increasingly preoccupied with their internal family politics -- which could prove a distraction from the need to reform and adapt to accommodate their own population's needs.

Funeral prayers for the prince would be held after sunset on Sunday, the royal court said in a statement. ?Burial traditionally follows immediately after prayers.?

Will Saudi-Bahrain union plan provoke Iran?

Al Arabiya television reported that the prayers would be held in a mosque in the holy city of Mecca.?

    New heir?
Nayef's death means the 89-year-old King Abdullah must nominate a new heir for the second time in nine months.?Defense?Minister Prince Salman, 76, seen as most likely to continue King Abdullah's cautious reforms, has long been viewed as the next most senior prince in the kingdom's succession.

Nayef, King Abdullah and Salman are among the nearly 40 sons of Saudi Arabia's founder, Abdulaziz bin Saud, who established the kingdom in 1935.

Salman was made defense minister in November and had served as Riyadh governor for five decades.?

?Report: Saudi Arabia to buy nukes if Iran tests A-bomb

The New York Times called the prince "hard-line but pragmatic" in a profile that ran in October.?

The article went on to quote an October 2009 American diplomatic cable that was obtained via WikiLeaks:

"Nayef is widely seen as a hard-line conservative who at best is lukewarm to King Abdullah?s reform initiatives ... However, it would be more accurate to describe him as a conservative pragmatist convinced that security and stability are imperative to preserve Al Saud rule and ensure prosperity for Saudi citizens."

Msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton and Reuters contributed to this report.?

Greeks go to polls in vote that could shake world

    Yannis Behrakis / REUTERS

A Greek orthodox priest holds his ballot paper as he exits a voting booth at an Athens primary school used as a polling station on Sunday.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 10:30 a.m. ET: ATHENS - As?polls?opened on Sunday in a Greek vote, the outcome of which could decide whether the heavily indebted country remains in the euro zone, the World Bank warned that the election of an anti-austerity government could spark a global economic crisis.

"Europe may be able to muddle through but the risk is rising. There could be a Lehmans moment if things are not properly handled," the outgoing head of the World Bank?Robert?Zoellick told Britain's Observer newspaper.

The bankruptcy of U.S. bank Lehman Brothers in September 2008 triggered a global financial slump that indebted western nations are still struggling to recover from.?

Policymakers and investors are nervously awaiting the outcome of this weekend's Greek election, which could empower radical leftists threatening to tear up the terms of a bailout deal and send shockwaves through financial markets.

Stocks soar on central bank readiness; Greece eyed

Sunday's election is a re-run of an earlier vote on May 6 which produced no clear winner and forced voters back to the polls for a vote that is seen as a referendum on the future of the single currency.?

"Things are getting worse and worse in Greece. There is no future for the next few years there," says Christos Christoglou, a Greek inspection engineer, who moved to Germany to find work.

The last opinion polls published before a two-week pre-election ban showed the radical Syriza party running neck-and-neck with the conservative New Democracy party of Antonis Samaras. But no party is likely to win enough votes to form a government on its own, meaning a coalition will have to be formed to avoid yet another election.

    'Most important election in history'
The ongoing uncertainty was a prime concern for Greek psychologist Sofia Arvanici who spoke to NBC News at a polling station in a northern suburb of Athens.?

"This is Greece's most important election in history," the 36-year-old said. "We don't know whether we will have a government tomorrow, but we can't have more instability. "

The European Union and International Monetary Fund have insisted that the conditions of the 130 billion bailout accord agreed in March must be accepted fully by a new government or funds will be cut off, driving Greece into bankruptcy.

Opinion polls show Greeks, weary after five years of deep recession, overwhelmingly favor remaining in the euro. But there is bitter anger over the repeated rounds of tax hikes, slashed spending and sharp cuts in wages.

"I voted with a heavy heart for a pro-bailout party because I want the country to stay in the euro, with the help of our European partners. I don't think the failed recipes of the left would get us out of this mess," Stratos Economou, 49, who runs a bakery shop in Athens, told Reuters.?

Germans on edge as key Greek vote nears

Zoellick and other policy makers insist that the austerity Greece is living with is preferable to the alternative.?

The Observer said the Zoellick would tell?a G-20 summit that the euro crisis could hit developing nations?hard, although clearly the effects would be felt further afield. ?

"Uncertainty in markets is now starting to increase costs for developing countries," he told the newspaper. "The ripple effects are making everybody's life harder."?

Watch World News videos on msnbc.com

The?G-20, which brings together finance ministers and central bank governors?from 19 major economies and the European Union, will start a meeting in Mexico on Monday. ?The gathering?in the Pacific resort of Los Cabos promised to be overshadowed by the elections in Greece and mounting worries about Spain and Italy.

"If the radical left wins (in Greece) -- which cannot be ruled out -- the consequences for the currency union are unforeseeable," Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg's prime minister and head of the group of eurozone finance ministers,?told the Austrian newspaper Kurier according to the Observer. "I can only warn everyone against leaving the currency union. The internal cohesion of the euro zone would be in danger."

Bartering takes hold in austerity-wracked Greece

Finance officials in the euro zone have discussed limiting the size of withdrawals from ATM machines, imposing border checks and introducing euro zone capital controls as a worst-case scenario.

During Sunday's election, voters will choose a new prime minister, but the election is also considered a proxy for a much bigger question: will Greece still use the Euro or not? CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera reports.

All parties actually say they will keep Greece in the single currency but Alexis Tsipras of the Syriza party believes the agreement can be renegotiated without Greece having to leave, betting that European leaders cannot afford the turmoil that would be unleashed by cutting a member of the euro zone loose.

But euro zone paymaster Germany has warned Greeks on Saturday the bailout would not be renegotiated.

"That's why it's so important that the Greek elections preferably lead to a result in which those that will form a future government say: 'Yes, we will stick to the agreements'," Chancellor Angela Merkel told a party conference of her Christian Democrats

On the right, establishment heir and New Democracy leader Samaras says rejection of the EU/IMF bailout would mean a return to the drachma and even greater economic calamity.

World Bank on Greece: Spain, Italy could be next

Samaras told supporters on Friday they faced a stark choice -- ?"euro versus drachma."

The fate of the euro as well as the European Union itself was top of mind for finance director?Kostas Theoharis, 40, as he cast his vote near Athens.?

"The main scenario is whether the euro will exist. This is the question that needs?answered rather than whether Greece will be part of the euro,"?he told NBC News at an Athens polling station with his son Alex, 6. ?"I fail to see how Greece could leave the euro without breaking up Europe. I understand that this is a financial problem but it needs a political solution."?

Polls opened at 7.00 a.m. (0400 GMT) and close at 7 p.m. Exit polls will follow soon after voting ends.

Central banks from Tokyo to London are readying arsenals to defend banks and national currencies against any post-election turmoil.?

NBC News' Yuka Tachibana, msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton and Reuters contributed to this report.?
