Brain Fitness Program Improves Memory ? Ivanhoe | Search Top ...

(Ivanhoe Newswire) ? UCLA researchers have found that older adults who regularly used a brain fitness program (which was played on a computer) demonstrated significantly improved memory and language skills.

The team studied 59 participants with an average age of 84, recruited from local retirement communities in Southern California. The volunteers were split into two groups: the first group used a brain fitness program for an average of 73.5 (20 minute) sessions across a six-month period while a second group played it less than 45 times during the same period. Researchers found that the first group demonstrated significantly higher improvement in memory and language skills, compared to the second group.

The study?s findings add to the field exploring whether such brain fitness tools may help improve language and memory and may ultimately help protect individuals from the cognitive decline associated with aging and Alzheimer?s disease.

Age-related memory decline affects approximately 40 percent of older adults and is characterized by self-perception of memory loss and decline in memory performance. Previous studies have shown that engaging in mental activities can help improve memory, but little research has been done to determine whether the numerous brain fitness games and memory training programs on the market are effective in improving memory. This is one of the first studies to assess the cognitive effects of a computerized memory training program.

The study also received a Blue Ribbon Award from the American Psychological Association. The Blue Ribbon Awards are based on independent, blind review and scored on methodological rigor, merit, and potential impact on the science and practice of clinical neuropsychology.

The Fast Food Fight: Restaurants Won't Be Hurt By Obamacare ...

Yesterday it was Papa John?s, today it?s White Castle, home of the slider and what seems to be a pretty equitable health insurance plan for employees, at least by fast-food industry standards. All the same, White Castle executives are making bogus claims about how Obamacare will hurt their business.

Mother Jones profiles White Castle?s claims in the story Will Obamacare Kill Off White Castle? The story is well worth a read and focuses on White Castle?s history of political giving (mostly to Republicans), the health care they offer (which in most cases would meet the standards set by Obamacare already) and how the fast food chain has used its connections with the National Restaurant Association to push bogus claims.

Take [White Castle VP Jamie] Richardson?s claim that Obamacare will cut White Castle?s profits in half. This charge is based on a single provision in the law, a requirement that larger companies that provide no insurance, expensive insurance, or lousy insurance pay a $3,000 per employee penalty. White Castle, because it already provides insurance, would only have to pay the $3,000 penalty for full-time employees whose out-of-pocket premium costs exceed 9.5 percent of their household income. White Castle employs very few?and perhaps zero?people who fit that description. Even then, the company would only have to pay if those employees purchased health insurance from an outside health insurance market, known as an exchange, and received tax credits to do so.

Attacks on the law coming out of the restaurant industry are starting to fall into two categories: exaggerated claims that the law is going to hurt business or tactical recognition that the companies care little for the welfare of the employees whose work provides their profits. The Mother Jones article demonstrates that.

White Castle, to its credit, does provide decent health care for its long-term, full-time employees. It appears to be making the exaggerated claims based purely on ideology.

Habitual Internet Network Marketing Success Is Simple! | Online ...

That?s possibly an unusual question, but the truth of it really is that network marketing success lies completely in your hands and depends on just a couple of factors.

* How disciplined you are to work

* The company you pick to represent

* How adaptable you are

* Which tools you employ

* The systems you leverage

The 5 Hurdles To Internet Network Marketing Success

Sounds fairly easy now does it not? It certainly can be, but only if you begin by using the right system. Do not buy into that you will become rich overnight in network marketing. A comfortable income relies on a perpetual stream of leads, but not just stone cold leads, you need qualified leads who are serious about consuming the product you are supplying. If you actually are a business person, then you have already spent many hours building your downline, trying to get leads and various other routes of capturing leads as well. If you use a proven system, that is great, but not all new network marketing specialists do.

It?s totally vital that the company you have chosen has been in business successfully for a period of time. That they have a great system of training sessions, an excellent product and a strong management team.

You?ll find that the most prominent mlm enterprises have great managerial teams. If you look at any of the companies which have been around for many years, you?ll see that their managing team is involved with the business, having a hands on approach, especially in the areas of marketing and promotion.

Tools are also critical, especially when you are trying to save time. The old style methods of chasing friends and acquaintances are gone in multilevel. Tools come in the shape of coaching and promotional materials, you should inspect them to be sure they are effective. After that, many firms will leave you to your own strategies.

Are there any dependable Internet network marketing success systems?

Yes, these systems include paths to make sales and market. You have to absorb both the art and the science of crafting qualified leads and working on a plan of making an ongoing flow of prospects every day.

Just think about it, how many successful companies who you know that don?t have any clients? Your network marketing prowess will rely totally on how effective you may be as a marketing specialist.

There are droves of professionals offering courses Online, who would willingly take your cash. They will tell you that they can eliminate your problems. If you have ever made the goof up of giving any of them your email address, you absolutely have regretted it, no doubt. Because, all you get now is pointless emails that waste your time, trying to sell you even more info to help you become seasoned.

Syrian troops push back rebels in Aleppo offensive

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Syrian troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad thrust into a battered rebel stronghold in the northern city of Aleppo on Wednesday, forcing defenders to fall back in fierce fighting.

The intensity of the conflict in Syria's biggest city and elsewhere suggests that Assad remains determined to cling to power, with support from Iran and Russia, despite setbacks such as this week's defection of his newly installed prime minister.

"We have retreated, get out of here," a lone rebel fighter yelled at Reuters journalists as they arrived in Aleppo's Salaheddine district. Nearby checkpoints that had been manned by rebel fighters for the last week had disappeared.

Syrian state television said government forces had pushed into Salaheddine, killing most of the rebels there, and had entered other parts of the city in a fresh offensive.

It said dozens of "terrorists" were killed in the central district of Bab al-Hadeed, close to Aleppo's ancient citadel, and Bab al-Nayrab in the southeast.

The military offensive appeared to be the most significant ground attack in Aleppo since rebels seized an arc of the city stretching from the southeast to the northwest three weeks ago.

Joma Abu Ahmed, an activist with the rebel Free Syrian Army, told Reuters that insurgents had fallen back to the nearby neighborhood of Saif al-Dawla, which was now under fire from army tanks inside Salaheddine and from combat jets.

Some rebels denied retreating and an opposition watchdog, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said fighting in the area was the most violent since insurgents first moved in.

ALEPPO POUNDED

"Fierce clashes are continuing inside Salaheddine district between rebel brigade fighters and the regime forces, which have stormed the district," the British-based Observatory said.

Abu Firas, a member of the Free Syrian Army, said rebels had left only one building in Salaheddine. "We did not withdraw, our guys are still there and the situation is in our favor."

The rebel Tawheed Brigade said its fighters had repelled Assad's forces trying to storm the shattered neighborhood.

"Yesterday they were able to destroy five tanks and a MiG plane near Aleppo International Airport," the brigade's field commander Abdulkader Saleh said in an emailed statement.

As Assad's forces battle for Aleppo, there has been no let-up in fighting elsewhere in Syria. More than 240 people were killed across the country on Tuesday, 40 of them in the central city of Homs, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Aleppo, at the heart of Syria's failing economy, has taken a fearful pounding since the 17-month-old uprising finally took hold in a city that had stayed mostly aloof from the revolt.

Satellite images released by Amnesty International, obtained from July 23 to Aug 1, showed more than 600 craters, probably from artillery shelling, dotting Aleppo and its environs.

"Amnesty is concerned that the deployment of heavy weaponry in residential areas in and around Aleppo will lead to further human rights abuses and grave breaches of international law," the human rights group said, adding that both sides might be held criminally accountable for failing to protect civilians.

The military's assaults in Aleppo follow its successful drive to retake neighborhoods seized by rebels in Damascus after a July 18 bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest aides, including his feared brother-in-law Assef Shawkat.

STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL

On Monday Assad suffered the embarrassment of seeing his prime minister, Riyad Hijab, defect after only two months in office. Hijab apparently fled to Jordan with his family.

Yet such defections and outside diplomatic pressure seem unlikely to deflect Assad from what has become a bitter struggle for survival between mostly Sunni Muslim rebels and a ruling system dominated by the president's minority Alawite sect, which is an esoteric offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Assad has firm support from old ally Iran, which sees Syria, along with Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah movement, as a pillar of an "axis of resistance" against the United States and Israel.

Syrian rebels, who have accused Iran of sending fighters to help Assad's forces, seized 48 Iranians in Syria on August 4, saying they were members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said some of the captives were retired soldiers or Revolutionary Guards who were on pilgrimage to a Shi'ite shrine in Damascus, but he denied any of them were on active service.

A Syrian rebel spokesman said on Monday that three of the kidnapped Iranians had been killed in a government air strike and the rest would be executed if the attacks did not stop.

Damascus and Tehran have accused Sunni Muslim Gulf Arab states and Turkey, all allies of Western powers, of stoking violence in Syria by supporting the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels.

A Syrian rebel group said it had killed a Russian general working as a military adviser in Syria, but the general himself later met Russian journalists at the Defence Ministry in Moscow.

"I want to confirm that I am alive and well," the general, identified by rebels as Vladimir Petrovich Kochyev, told reporters, Russia's Itar-Tass news agency said.

Russia, which has scores of advisers and technicians in Syria, some of them at a Russian naval maintenance base in the port of Tartus, has given Assad firm diplomatic support.

Along with China, it has vetoed three Western-backed United Nations Security Council resolutions aimed at intensifying pressure on the Syrian leader to step down, rather than using force to crush opposition to four decades of Assad family rule.

The violence in Syria has forced tens of thousands of people to flee into neighboring countries, and about 2,400 refugees, including two generals, arrived in Turkey overnight.

Turkey's state-run Anatolian news agency said most of them were women and children from areas near Aleppo and the northwestern city of Idlib, but also included 37 defecting military personnel. Nine were receiving hospital treatment.

Before the latest influx, Turkey said it was sheltering 47,500 Syrians fleeing a conflict which opposition sources say has cost at least 18,000 people since it began in March 2011.

A rally on Wall Street slows; Priceline tanks

A stock market rally lost steam Wednesday after mixed earnings from U.S. companies added to fears about Europe's economic slowdown.

Several big consumer goods companies warned that weak demand in Europe was cutting into their revenue. That followed worrisome economic news from England, France and Germany, where growth had offset recessions in other European countries like Italy and Greece.

Major U.S. stock indexes were mixed in afternoon trading. The Dow Jones industrial average rose eight points to 13,176 as of 1:15 p.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added a fraction of a point to 1,401. The Nasdaq composite index fell four to 3,011.

The Dow had risen 290 points over the previous three trading days. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 passed 1,400 and the Nasdaq composite closed above 3,000, both for the first time since early May.

As stocks in New York traded tentatively, the dollar rose against the euro, a sign that investors are becoming more fearful.

"It's not unusual for the market to pull back a bit after a strong move, absorb the latest earnings news and look to see the next catalyst to move higher," Quincy Krosby, market strategist with Prudential Financial, said.

The market is being held back in part by reports from consumer-goods companies that weak sales in Europe are hurting revenue, Krosby said. Consumer discretionary stocks fell the most among the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500.

McDonalds fell $1.39, or 2 percent, to $87.62 after the company said a key revenue figure came in flat in July as the weakening global economy took a toll on customers of the world's biggest burger chain. McDonalds was the weakest stock in the Dow.

Priceline.com fell more than $100 after warning investors late Tuesday that its third-quarter revenue and income would come in far below anlaysts' forecasts because of the deepening malaise in Europe. Priceline's stock sank $108.20, or 16 percent, to $571.54.

Priceline's travails dragged on other online travel sites. Expedia and TripAdvisor both fell 5 percent. That made them three of the four biggest losers in the S&P 500 index.

Ralph Lauren fell $3.85, or 3 percent, to $149.18 after the company forecast a revenue decline in the current quarter and cautioned that the weak global economy might reduce spending on its clothes and housewares.

"It's no longer a theoretical argument that Europe is hampering earnings for American companies," Krosby said. "It's a reality, and you're seeing that today."

Earlier Wednesday, the Bank of England said it expects the country's economy to stagnate this year. Only three months earlier, in its previous quarterly inflation report, the BOE had forecast annual growth of 0.8 percent.

Separately, the French central bank said it expects France's economy to contract in the third quarter, the second pullback in a row.

Standard & Poor's lowered its outlook on Greece's long-term credit rating, saying the bailed-out nation will likely need more aid from its international lenders as its economy crumbles and leaders delay imposing harsh austerity measures.

And in Germany, industrial output and exports dropped sharply in June, a sign that Europe's strongest economy might finally be succumbing to the regional crisis.

Bloomin' Brands Inc., operator of the Outback Steakhouse and other restaurant chains, jumped $1.88, or 17 percent, to $12.88 in its first day of trading on the Nasdaq.

Among other companies making big moves:

? Macy's rose 95 cents, or 3 percent, to $37.95 after the department store chain said its net income in the second quarter rose 16 percent and beat analysts' estimates.

? Alpha Natural Resources fell 34 cents, or 5 percent, to $6.56 after reporting a wider net loss in the second quarter. The coal producer is struggling to compete with cheap natural gas.

? Dean Foods soared $4.49, or 36 percent, to $16.91 after the company posted a second-quarter profit, raised its full-year forecast and announced the initial public offering of a dairy subsidiary that makes Horizon Organic milk and Land O' Lakes butter. It was the biggest percentage gain of any stock in the S&P 500.

? Higher One Holdings Inc., which markets financial services to millions of U.S. higher education students, fell 31 cents, or 3 percent, to $11.20 after the company said its second-quarter net income declined and fell far short of analysts' expectations.

Graphic Controller ArtistaGUI from Distec Connects Graphical User Interface and Touch Applications with Easy To Use Controls

Graphic controller ArtistaGUI from Distec connects graphical user interfaces and touch applications with easy to use controls

Germering (Germany) August 6, 2012 ? With ArtistaGUI, Distec GmbH ? leading German specialist for TFT-LCD flat screens and system solutions for industrial and multimedia application ? introduces a new human-machine-interface (HMI) controller that allows expansion of simple controls with TFT displays. Programming of the GUI (Graphical User Interface) is carried out with a WYSIWYG-Interface-Designer and the scripting language QT-Quick. The communication protocol is the robust and in-field proven Modbus-RTU. ?Machines and devices can be equipped with a modern graphical user interface in the course of a product modernization, but this is typically possible only with substantial modifications to the control electronics,? explained Dieter Kiermaier, Director Technical Product Marketing at Distec. ?The existing microcontrollers usually don?t have a graphical interface and a complete change of the machine?s controls is complex and costly. This is exactly where our newly developed controller for the new GUI extension applies. To equip simple machine controls with a graphical user interface and Touch without extensive redesign, we designed the ArtistaGUI graphic controller.?

ArtistaGUI is serially connected to the machine control in place by means of the widely-used Modbus-RTU-Protocol and can therefore transmit instructions and read data for the display. The control already in use may be furthermore used without any constraints. With dimensions of only 105 x 90 mm, the small and easy to implement ArtistaGUI-device supports LCD panels with resolutions of up to 800 x 600 (SVGA) with 18/24 Bit LVDS- or TTL interface. Already implemented on the assembly is a controller for 4-wire resistive touch sensors. P-Cap-touches may also be connected. Other product features include an integrated LED backlight driver, the power supply via 12 V DC as well as an SD card for the application programs. Programming is easily possible using a WYSIWYG editor and the scripting language QT Quick. Data, such as commands or measuring values, are serially exchanged between machine control and GUI by the Modbus protocol. As the service supplier, on customer request Distec offers complete design of the graphical interface as well as adaptations of the protocol to the particular application.

Maxthon 3.4

By Michael Muchmore

There's a new browser in town, and it's toting some pretty impressive firepower. In fact, Maxthon has been around for nearly a decade, but it will probably be new to most who read this. Maxthon 3.4 is not only the most feature-rich browser you'll find, but its speed and standards compatibility levels are eyebrow-raising. Want to capture video playing inside the browser or grab a screenshot, Maxthon has the tools. Want syncing of tabs, bookmarks, and even notes? You guessed it, Maxthon can do it with built-in tools. Sick of bright white webpage backgrounds burning out your eyes? Maxthon's night mode can come to your rescue. You don't have to worry about a site being incompatible with the maverick browser, either, since it includes both Google Chrome's and Internet Explorer's underlying webpage rendering engines.

Interface
By default, Maxthon's interface isn't as sparse as those of the current browser crowd. But it has a few brilliant touches, and as you use it you'll discover more and more as you go along. A rail along the left gives access to Favorites, Downloads, Feeds, SkyNotes (more on that later), and Tab sync. But you can add extensions to this rail, such as a Facebook sharer, a Twitter tweeter, shopping assisters, and games. I didn't see an ad blocker in Maxthon's own extension gallery, but third-party Maxthon extension sites offer them.

To the left of the tabs along the very top, you'll see a large blue smiley-face button, which accesses the program's large main menu dialog. The smiley turns into your own user picture when you create a syncing account with Maxthon, making for a truly personalized browser. And the personalization goes even further: The Skins feature lets you radically customize the browser's border, tabs, and buttons, with hundreds of choices ranging from cute kid-style themes to polished metal looks. It's a lot more power over the look of your browser than you get with Chrome or IE. Installation of skins is quick and restart-free, and once you've downloaded one, it's available from a button on the browser border.

Tabs
Maxthon's tab implementation is actually a weak spot: I couldn't rip a tab out to create a new browser window, as I could with every other major browser. And forget about Opera 12's tab previews or IE, Chrome, and Firefox's tab-pinning. Another minor inconvenience is that you can't close a tab unless it's the active one. But the browser does offer a unique split-screen view that shows two tab contents side by side. A button dropdown lets you close or refresh all tabs at once.

Maxthon's new-tab page is every bit as useful as that of any other browser, save possibly Opera's, which offers live updated mini apps. In Maxthon, you can move the link tiles around on the grid to taste, and add any sites you want (Chrome only puts your most-visited sites on the tiles.) Maxthon also lets you choose a background either from stock art you're your own images. And you can sync the tiles with your other Maxthon installations or hide them for a blank white page. When I tried syncing, however, each tile on the second PC showed my present above the default tile, and didn't link to my choice.

Extras
Now for the fun stuff: As I mentioned at the outset, Maxthon comes more stocked with goodies than any browser you're likely to encounter. Traversing around the edges of the browser window reveals these. I already mentioned the Extensions bar on the left, but some of the cooler features lurk in the toolbar button at top right and in the lower-right border.

A highlight among these perks is the Resource Sniffer, accessible from the toolbar. Go to any page that contains video, music, or photos, and the Resource Sniffer can download it all for you. But when you're on a page with video with Sniffer enabled, the movie plays in a separate Maxthon video window, which can be annoying and hard to dismiss. And on a page that offered MP3 downloads, the Sniffer didn't show any audio files available. I was however able to download videos from all the major video sharing sites.

Other nifty options in the toolbar include Magic Fill?pretty a multi-account password manager; Snap, which grabs a screen capture of either the whole browser or an area you select with a cross-hairs; Feed Reader, which can display RSS and Atom feeds nicely; and SkyNote, which lets you jot down text that will be available from other devices running Maxthon. The toolbar also gives access to frequently needed Windows items like My Computer, Paint, Calc, and you can even add any program to run from the External Tools button.

A favorite Maxthon trick of mine is Night Mode, which darkens bright interfaces?it even lets you choose text and background colors?for any site. Akin to this is the Mute button at the bottom in the status bar, which makes sure you won't be disturbed by noisy auto-playing sites. You can also set the status bar to display your upload or download speeds, CPU usage, and IP address.

Like Safari, Maxthon offers a "reading view" for text-heavy webpages. This eliminates distracting ads and images. When you arrive at a suitable page, a book icon appears in the address bar, and clicking this presents a clean white page of text. Another cool visual tool is the "telestrator": Holding down the right mouse button, you can highlight an area on any Web page.

One extra you don't get in Maxthon (but do in Opera) is a built-in BitTorrent client. Nor, for that matter, will you get Opera's Turbo Mode, mail client, or Speed Dial apps. Like Opera, Maxthon allows mouse-gesture input, for example, letting you navigate back by holding the right button and clicking on the left one. ?Use Maxthon for a while, and you'll likely find even more hidden treasures.

Syncing and Start Page
Maxthon by default starts up with a pretty useful start page, showing links, news, search, and popular videos. You can customize to the hilt, with your own links and location. I mentioned that you can use Maxthon's Cloud Sync to synchronize notes on any computer or device you use to log into Maxthon; you can do the same for bookmarks, options, the address bar, new-tab links, and Magic Fill passwords. A separate extension enables tab syncing, too.
