Resveratrol and Menopause
Resveratrol is also effective in maintaining hormonal balance after menopause. Hormone Replacement Therapy is most commonly used in post-menopausal women to aid in the halted production of estrogen. However, HRT also makes for an increased risk in breast cancer, strokes, heart attacks and blood clots. Ongoing research demonstrates that resveratrol binds to human estrogen receptors. This increases hormonal activity in the body almost as effectively as HRT without the risks and side effects. It has been suggested that resveratrol supplementation may be a possible alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy. Further researches might be able to uncover more benefits for women?s health.
In conclusion, women can benefit greatly from the intake of resveratrol. Aside from the medical implications, there are also cosmetic benefits in the form of resveratrol?s anti-aging and weight loss properties.
A faster metabolic rate in women also increases the efficacy of the immune system. Hormonal imbalance may be remedied by the steady intake of resveratrol as well. Though it is always best to take resveratrol while on a steady and regular diet and exercise. That being said, bear in mind that resveratrol is a supplement not a prescription medicine.
Resveratrol was found to help women in combating post-menopausal bone loss. Moreover, Resveratrol also prevents the growth of angiogenesis, the tumor-causing blood vessels. Because of this, it also helps in preventing breast cancer in at any age.
One thing to note though, that even if there are a lot of good things that Resveratrol brings to women?s health, Resveratrol is not advised when a woman is pregnant and lactating. First, of all, wine-drinking is discouraged for such women because alcohol consumption at any stage of a woman?s pregnancy is unsafe. Women, who wish to take Resveratrol, for supplementary reasons, may do so using pills and must consult with their doctors first before taking a particular brand at a particular dosage.
NOTE: There is still little known about the effect of estrogen WITH resveratrol. And until more studies surface regarding the estrogenic activity of Resveratrol, women who have histories of having estrogen-sensitive cancers should stay away from taking Resveratrol supplements. Examples of such cancers include breast, uterine and ovarian.

First Horses Shrunk by Warming Climate
The sizes of the earliest equines followed the ancient temperatures through major climate change, adding evidence to a centuries-old evolutionary theory
By Katherine Harmon ?| February 23, 2012
Pony down: Did ancient warming shrink the earliest horses? Scientists are already noticing other animals getting smaller with contemporary climate change.

The first horses in North America would not have been able to hold their own in the Triple Crown. At just about 5.6 kilograms the Sifrhippus sandrae hoofed onto the scene some 56 million years ago about the size of a small dog.
But then a funny thing happened. In the next 130,000 years during the Paleocene?Eocene Thermal Maximum, these small equines got even smaller, reaching the tiny size of 3.9 kilograms?some 30 percent lighter than their initial heft. Just 45,000 years later, however, the genus had bulked up to seven kilograms. And the horses were not the only ones. Many other mammals in the area followed the same pattern.
These animals' sizes likely resulted from relatively rapid climate change, suggest the authors of a new study published online Thursday in Science.
The study "highlights the importance of temperature on evolution?particularly mammal evolution," says Felisa Smith, a professor of biology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, who wrote an essay on the findings in the same issue of Science. And it adds a new high-resolution tracking of body size and temperature during a crucial?and long puzzling?time in geologic history.

Looking the small horse in the mouth
The researchers did not have complete skeletons to measure for all of the animals, so to track the size of the horses over time they looked at their teeth?in particular, their molars. "It turns out that teeth are much better than femurs," Smith says. A leg bone "does tell you something about size, but teeth are much better." And as far as teeth go, she says, "the best thing to know is the area of the first molar."
The teeth came from a fossil-rich area called Cabin Fork in Wyoming and are part of a substantial collection at the University of Florida built in part by study co-author Jonathan Bloch, an associate curator of vertebrate paleontology there. From the collection, the research team could estimate the size of about 44 diminutive adult horses.
Some 40 percent of other mammals in the area seem to have experienced similar shrinking and subsequent growth, notes co-author Ross Secord, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Nebraska?Lincoln. They stuck with the small horses, however, because they had much more solid records from which to accurately date the samples.
The researchers used oxygen isotopes left by freshwater in the fossils to track mean annual temperature from when the animals had been alive. In particular, they sampled the isotopes from teeth of a large, water-dwelling mammal Coryphodon. With these isotope readings, "you get a little, tiny window as to what the temperature was at that time," Smith says.
This close reading has excited Smith and others who have been tracking animal size over the ages. "Although we knew that temperature might set a maximum for body size," Smith says, the new findings actually present a mechanism?and do so in a very detailed manner, showing "how animals responded to a particular temperature at a particular place at a particular time."

Ubuntu on Android becomes real, looks to take on Moto's Webtop experience
This, folks, is Ubuntu on Android. An honest-to-goodness, not janky or VNC'd, full build of the Linux distro powered by an Android smartphone.
We'll let that sink in.
Canonical -- the company behind Ubuntu -- today announced that it's bringing the full Ubuntu experience to multi-core Android phones in the same way that Motorola has attempted to extend its hardware to a more traditional computing experience with Webtop. That is, you'll connect your phone to a keyboard and display, and from there have full control over a proper Ubuntu experience, all powered by the phone. Because your Android smartphone is already running a Linux kernel, the marriage between your phone and Ubuntu is darn near seamless.
Canonical gave us a walkthrough of the experience, and it really couldn't be more simple. Dock the phone, and Ubuntu Unity fires up. Photos and videos are instantly available in the desktop experience.
But photos and videos are chump change. You've got full Chromium and Thunderbird apps. VLC. The Ubuntu Music Player. If it's on Ubuntu, it can be on your phone.
But the real power is in the ability to launch your Android apps within that desktop experience. Same goes for contacts. Or your network settings. Or your notifications. It's Android within an Ubuntu experience. And it's pretty slick.
As for hardware requirements, you'll need a dual-core smartphone with at least a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. You'll need 2GB of storage free as well, plus USB host mode and HDMI out, plus video acceleration. Older phones need not apply, basically.
It's worth repeating that this is your phone powering Ubuntu -- not the Ubuntu desktop on your phone. We're going to get a close look at Mobile World Congress next week in Barcelona, Spain. Stay tuned. For now, we've got Canonical's full press release after the break.
